Armed with a metal detector Merlin Cadogan, 40, waded through the waves at Westward Ho! in Devon in search of gems from the deep.

He said he 'couldn't believe his eyes' when to his delight his waterproof device sounded its alarm and he reached in to the water and pulled out the substantial lump of gold.

Mr Cadogan quickly tested the 37.7g nugget and found it was at least 18 carat - worth around £600.

He reckons his finding could spark a rush among treasure hunters keen to get their hands on other buried riches at South Gut beach.
