new detector

Hi all
Extremely new to the hobby, I obtained an old Maplin detector from a car boot sale, have been practicing in the garden using buried metals but don't seem to get much diff between them.
With intrepid investigation i have now come to the conclusion that this detector is not the best of its kind and has not much discrimination.
Looking across the web , the Garrett series seem to be very popular and reasonably priced so am looking for advice on which would be the better model to look into getting? Open to all advice and thanks in advice for any given

Hi swingit, welcome to the forum

One of the first detectors i had was the ACE 250, cracking little machine, i know more Garret models have been released so cannot vouch for those.
My wife uses the Garret now if she comes with me, my daughter (9) uses a Minelab Gofind60 which in my opinion is a very good beginners machine

Pretty sure some others will comment, enjoy the forum.

Nice to see your daughter is following in your footsteps. At the moment I am keeping an eye on the old bay at the Garrett series, on quite a strict budget at the mo but no rush, I will find one.

Have a look the website  www.dugupcoin.com, it is a metal detecting auction site just like ebay, but the fees are a lot less, Mike who runs it is one of the moderators on here.
