A Mobile woman found a Tennessee surgeon's ring while exploring the the Hillsdale Heights neighborhood with her metal detector, according to the University of Tennessee Knoxville.

Barbara Burgess, is a nurse and a hobby metal detectorist, found Dr. Stephen R. Sheppard's University of Tennessee Class of 1970 ring in front of a home in the Hillsdale Heights subdivision behind the University of South Alabama in Mobile.

The ring was about four inches deep in the dirt.

"Other than a few scratches and dulling of the stone, it cleaned up good as new," Burgess said.

The inside of the ring read "SRS."

She contacted the UT Office of Alumni Affairs. Officials learned Sheppard had previously contacted the office about his missing ring.
