Police have launched an appeal over 'illegal metal detecting' at an ancient North Wales castle.

North Wales Police (NWP) want information after it was confirmed there had been metal detecting at Dinas Bran Castle near Llangollen.

A tweet by NWP Rural Crime Team "The team have received confirmation today from @cadwwales that unknown persons have been illegally metal detecting inside the remains of Dinas Bran Castle, Llangollen.

"Any information please it's 101, NWP webchat or @Wales_CS

"It is unknown if any artefact has been taken."

Guidance from Cadw - the Welsh monuments agency, says metal detectorists must ask the permission of the landowner before using a metal detector on their property.
"Metal detectorists adopting best practice will avoid legally protected sites and activities that could damage sensitive places. If someone asks you for permission to use a metal detector on your scheduled monument, you should inform them that the site is scheduled and that they need consent from Cadw," the advice says.
According to the National Council for Metal Detecting (NCMD) website in May 2020 "detecting can be carried out in Wales within the standard exercise rules," under coronavirus restrictions.

On Saturday (13/03/21) Wales moved to a "stay local ", rule rather than "stay at home" after lockdown restrictions were eased, meaning people can travel within a general five mile radius.
