Coins which fell out of people's pockets as they fled the Great Fire of London in 1666 are set to fetch thousands of pounds at auction.
Many of artefacts were only recently dug up in the mud on the banks of the River Thames after laying undiscovered for more than 300 years. Experts believe the money flew from the pockets and bags of traders when they ran for their lives as fire engulfed the capital. Roger Green spent 35 years collecting the coins along with 17th century trade tokens from his native Kent.
The entire collection is expected to fetch between £15,000 and £20,000 when it is sold at Hansons Auctioneers later this month. Mr Green said: 'Tokens from the river are usually in good condition as they're in a sealed layer of silt which preserves them from the ravages of time.
