Archeologists and Metal detectorists look below surface at Fort Dobbs

Brick homes and grassy fields line the west end of Fort Dobbs Road in Statesville. The winding paths can make it difficult to take in scenery, and you may not notice the fort's site unless you're looking.
 
The historic area is marked by a modest log cabin and remains calm for most of the year. But people say not to judge a book by its cover -- so archaeologists looked beneath the surface to see what they could find.

Private groups, state representatives and members of the U.S. Forest Service volunteered to conduct an archaeological investigation at Fort Dobbs on Wednesday to better understand the everyday life of soldiers.


During the investigation, about 40 artifacts were found that could be from the 18th century. The items include bullets, shoe buckles and pieces of soldiers' equipment.


Fort Dobbs, which is no longer standing, was the only fort built on the North Carolina frontier during the French-Indian War. Over 250 years ago, it was attacked by Cherokees.
