Henry VIII archaeological dig: Beaulieu developers reveal exactly what was hidden in Chelmsford



After weeks of mystery surrounding an archaeological dig on the borders of a new Chelmsford housing estate, we can now reveal exactly what was hidden there for half a millennium.

Rumours were rife that an excavation team had unearthed a Tudor oven belonging to Henry VIII, but now it has emerged the 500-year-old artefact is in fact a post-medieval lime kiln.

The archaeological project is being carried out just a few hundred yards south of the New Hall School netball courts and was commissioned by the new Beaulieu estate developers Countryside & L&Q.
