National Trust criticised over Stonehenge tunnel

The National Trust and English Heritage have been criticised for backing a tunnel under part of the Stonehenge world heritage site, which it is claimed could lead to the site losing its world heritage status.

In a letter to The Times, Kate Fielden, the vice-chairwoman of the British Archaeological Trust, warned that the engineering works required to bury the A303 would irreparably damage "substantial tracts of an internationally renowned archaeological landscape -- a world heritage site that the government is committed to protect under the 1972 World Heritage Convention".
