Archeologists’ dig to discover more about Roman temple under Leicester Cathedral

Archeologists were today due to begin exploring under Leicester Cathedral to try to find a Roman temple.

A dig will aim to locate a pagan place of worship reported during work in the mid-19th century.

Dr Philip Dixon will lead the search, which could last up to five weeks.

Cathedral canon missioner the Rev Peter Hobson said: "It was not uncommon for Christians to build their churches and cathedrals on places where the Romans had worshipped.
