Evidence of a defensive ditch in Newark used to protect the town hundreds of years ago has been unearthed during water works in the town.

Engineers from Severn Trent Water were carrying out work as part of a £60 million investment in the town's water system when the discovery was made.

The ditch would have been used as part of Newark's defences during the English Civil War in the 17th century.
